Growth Within Structure
Project Outline: Working within an existing shell to
design a boutique hotel with 3 room types, lobby and
a public space.
The intent was to take an existing building, modeled on the
Alhambra Palace and to retain its charm while modernizing it
to the demands of the jet set. Ensuring a clear distinction between
pre-existing elements and updated features to show the buildings
growth through modernization. Extending beyond the architecture to
lighting, garden design and furniture with a juxtaposition of antique furnishings
housed within a modern space. Visible lighting fixtures are reduced
to antique wrought iron pieces with remaining light done through linear
coves. The gardens also showcase the central contrast of new and old with
the courtyard gardens conforming to a restrained traditional pattern while the
suite gardens are elevated with large concrete and cedar blocking. The physical
incorporation of plants throughout the hotel serves as an alternate and more visceral
interpretation of growth, that heightens the dichotomy between the fresh face of the
old structure.
