A Wellness Center for Saint Jude Hospital in Vieux Fort, Saint Lucia to explore and develop a model that promotes sustainable healthcare design across the tropics.
A precedent was studied to understand sustainability techniques currently in use: the CBF Women’s Health Centre in Burkina Faso, Africa by FAREstudio. The main components applied include two volumes joined by a central ramp, double roof system, and lifting the entire structure off the ground. The ramp is used not only to gain access to the building, but also to provide a tranquil environment for patients, particularly those rehabilitating their legs. The double roof system allows for natural ventilation throughout the building. More natural ventilation is achieved by raising the building off the ground, which also helps decrease the amount of dirt and dust entering on the ground floor.
