Timisoara Architecture Faculty and Institute- Final Project - coauthor: Gabriel Nicoara

The Project
This was a two stage project. In the first one we tried to organise the Campus of Timisoara in a coherent project, creating so a set up for the second phase case study, that implied imagining a new architecture institution: The Institute and Faculty of Architecture

Phase1-The Campus
We look at the campus as a node in a network of city centers, we look at it both in its relations with other nodes and as a well defined entity. Our main goal was to create a strong identity for the campus. We designed the main guidelines creating a clear strucure for the exiting urban fabric, and then, we placed new key functions, to deffine centers. Two things were mandatory for the campus : to imagine one project for the whole campus which is based on the collaboration between different univercities, and then, to create a network of public spaces, where students can meet and debate ideas. For the campuses design we proposed a ten step scenario and then a set of operating diagrams.

Phase2-The building function
The function of the building is in fact an architecture center, a mixed used building, an institution capable to teach and promote architecture as a discipline. It is at the same time an architecture school, an exhibition place, a space for workshops, conferences and training, a research institute, and an archive of local architectural works. So, this building creates a platform of dialogue on the subject of architecture for the differet actors interested in it.

Phase2-Generating the building
This building is like a mechanism. It will be generated by sliding different functions along a main flow. So, the building can take different configuration, depending on the relations between different functions (nodes), and depending on the operative diagrams. Nodes at the building level connect to the nodes at the campus level, generating the building as a result of campus level networks interactions and as an interaction of building functions. The functions are coordinated by the main flow, which is a ribbon of working areas that changes its thickness, character, and activity (workshop, studio, study areas). This ribbon unites the hole building and represents its core.
