The Learning Barge

The Learning Barge is a collaborative design and fabrication initiate of students from UVA School’s of Architecture and Engineering started in 2005 and completed in September 2009. This project incorporates research and sustainable design principals to promote environmental education on the Elizabeth River. It is a floating field station powered by solar and wind energy, collects rainwater, filters gray water with native plants and utilizes recycled and renewable materials. I was a critical member of the build team and worked closely with the project and construction managers as a team leader. During the build, I honed my skills at general carpentry, on-site design and build problem solving, sustainable systems implementation, finish carpentry, roofing, knowledge of building materials, communication between team members with a diverse knowledge base, team organization and motivation.
