Pattern Language: Mixed-Use

Pattern is all around us; it can be found in the grid of the city streets, the structural bay of the building, the brick used to clad the building. Pattern is how we understand the world around us, whether it is the straightforward pattern of stacked brick or a pattern of great complexity that one cannot immediately understand.

The existing building had a grid system based on the twenty foot structural bay, which is how I determined the program of the space. This pattern extenuates the fact that the site is long and narrow by making half the site into a sculpture garden. The pattern allows for exterior space for people to enjoy as well as bring natural light into the building where there was none before.
