The Liberty Street Towers Project is a high rise apartment building located in Lower Manhattan across from the World Trade Center Site. The objective is to create a residential tower that would not be seen as another office tower. This was accomplished by using a rather standard structural steel grid that is punctuated at various levels with cantilevered sections. The overall structural system is supplemented with a substructural system every floor, to allow for a more open exterior system.
The building is divided into two main sections where one is defined by mostly single story apartments and the other by two story apartments both of which interact with the winter gardens at different levels.
The main winter gardens are located on the circulation transition levels, and are comprised of multiple story spaces. The main occupied spaces around the apartments are located every 5 stories with access to the atrium balconies from all other levels, allowing ventilation to circulate through the entire building.
