Union Pacific Park

The City of Nampa wants to create a park that connects a future regional trail with downtown and residential neighborhoods.  The Stoddard Trail was once a local railway, but is now abandoned and has the potential to provide  use for the city.  My job was to design a park with a water feature and a meandering pathway.  The park will service nearby residents with recreational opportunities and transportation needs.  There has been gradual redevelopment  in downtown Nampa in which many areas are being revamped for future use.  This project has  emphasized safety, vehicle movement and access requirement, and the general character and aesthetics of the area surrounding the trail.

The bridges will be part of the garden. As discussed before, the railway garden will have the experience of passive recreation which will include walking over Blue Idaho Fescue. The fescue will mimic the Snake River located south of Nampa. It grows to about one foot tall and usually has a bluish-green tint, giving the sense of walking over water. Since one of the original objectives was sustainability, it is hoped that the garden will not need much labor to be maintained. The bridges should be...

Since one of the original objectives was sustainability, it is hoped that the garden will not need much labor to be maintained. The bridges should be wide enough to allow people to walk both directions. It is also suggested that this be a pedestrian-only bridge, excluding bicycles, skateboards, or anything other than walking.
The pergola will be a shaded area with seating along the pathway. The posts and crossbeams could have vines to provide slightly more shade and create interest above the gathering space. This pergola is essentially a form of a gazebo but is much less formal and allows for more space. Information about this history of the site could serve as a center piece for this area. The pergola should be placed so that both sides of the pathway may connect with it: the garden pathway and the regional trail...

The pergola should be placed so that both sides of the pathway may connect with it: the garden pathway and the regional trail. This would encourage people to want to visit the pergola and actually use it as opposed to isolating it from any other park features.
The splash pad will be 30’ x 60’ with the pathway wrapping around it. Being able to wrap the pathway completely around the splash pad will depend on the ability to purchase a piece of land on that side of the site. there are different alternatives to take for the water feature. Each mimics a different kind of pattern. For example, the top left is a meandering river similar to the railroad garden. The top right is a circle with Canyon County or Idaho in the center. On the bottom left the straight line mimics railroad track with the bottom right being a traditional water feature which is found in most places. there should be some form of artwork on the splash pad.
The train display will not be an actual train but rather a concrete head and footer with rail lines on it to mimic real ones. The Blue Idaho Fescue will resemble the river while the retaining walls resemble a canyon. The depth of this mock river will be from one to two feet. Rock laid on the bottom will be flat pieces of basalt, which is part of the sustainable, low-cost objectives of this project. An information board will be placed at the beginning of the trail and follow along the rail...
