This competition was a means to address Newark's economic decline from transportation and manufacturing powerhouse. The competition is part of a overall effort to transform Newark's economy onto one based around housing with various real-estate development projects. The new visitor center taking cues form the many cargo ships which once passed through the Passaic River in-order to maintain its identity as it progresses towers the future .
