Earthquakes have the power to destroy civic and religious buildings that generate a sense of identity within a community. I am proposing a void in contrast to the normative built environment that gives “place” to a particular district. This solution is a model for rural communities in Haiti. The modular system is easy to transport and to assemble. It is also adaptable to various programmatic and topographical needs. La Place Publique desires to “create economic opportunities or “growth poles” outside of Port-au-Prince in an effort to decentralize this densely populated city. It will not only provide employment to people from the community, it will also attract visitors from neighboring cities. While La Place Publique is not the only solution, it can begin to have an impact on rural communities and major cities by creating economic growth opportunities, increasing education, and recreating a sense of place.
