As project designer/project manager with Hubbell + Hubbell Architects, I am proud to have been a part of the 'Farrar Green Dream Home', a net-zero energy home overlooking Lake Hodges in Escondido, CA. The home incorporates passive solar design strategies to minimize the need for mechanical heating and cooling, and has a ground-source heat pump to provide low impact heating and cooling when required. The large photovoltaic array provides enough energy to power the home as well as two plug-in electric vehicles. In addition to the various low VOC and recycled/reclaimed finish materials, the property has an 80-tree orchard, rabbit and chicken coops, and large vegetable garden to provide much of the residents grocery needs. This home was chosen to be a San Diego Gas and Electric Case Study home because of its minimal impact on the strained regional power grid.
