Housing Unit for Santa Rosa, Galapagos Islands

Thesis Project "Sustainable Urban Architectonic Intervention in Santa Rosa, Santa Cruz Island, Galapagos, Ecuador" responds to the basic needs and services that are scarce or nonexistent in many rural settlements and even in urban conglomerations of very low income families, living mostly in developing countries.

In the specific case of Santa Rosa, a way of proposing services to this growing population was found, including potable water, grey water disposal, compost production and the reuse of organic waste. An important issue was the use of local construction materials that didn't harm the unusually delicate environment of the Galapagos Islands. Regarding imported supplies such as vegetables, local agriculture was proposed to reach some autonomy from continental Ecuador, since most provisions need to be imported.
