The assignment was to create twenty units with at least three of them ADA accessible, Along with these programmatic entities I also had to account for parking, public spaces, retail, and commercial zones.
The main organizational element of the project was the collection and celebration of rain. I wanted to create some a kind of nostalgic feeling usually associated with the element of water.
I created a ribbon-like landscape of ramps that would take the residents to their units. As the residents ascend to their units on rainy days they hear the water fall from the pools to the gutters, creating streams that run parallel to the ramps.
All units have a visual relationship to the water. The four rain collecting pools are seamed together by a landscape that the residents use. At each end of the landscape there are metal canopies that one can sit under and listen to the droplets on the metal surface that also shelters them from the rain.
During dry season more landscape would become available for use as the water level drops.
