McCarthy Quad Transformation

The Mc.Carthy Quad is located in USC campus between Doheny Library and Leavey Library and is used by students not only as a passageway but also as a place for relaxation and recreational activities such as playing Frisbee. It is also utilized sometimes for special events such as live concerts.

The transformation to the quad area utilized the idea of man-made versus nature and the relation between the two. An island of nature is created for students to explore and wonder and yet still being connected to the surrounding campus. Keeping the original functions in mind, the inner part of the raised park becomes an amphitheater surrounded by step seating for special events. The outer portion becomes a more secluded yet intimate setting. The space created under the raise seating and park is then utilized for storage and cafe area. People are still able to cut across the site diagonally, similar to the original paths with the addition of a bridge that leads to the south off the raised path.
