Located in the heart of Los Angeles Koreatown, Switchback Elementary addresses multiple issues when dealing with education facilities in an urban setting: security, urban frontage and pedestrian access. The school provides two fronts one urban along Western Avenue, one suburban along Oxford Avenue. These two fronts address the neighboring densities and architectural characters. Students at this school are largely separated from ground activity, excluding those events that would drive them to occupy these ground zones. The community has partial access to ground facilities after school hours. The switchback design allows for ease of studnet circulation to and from the classroom while also providing a tool with which to organize the progression of grades K-5.
