Rachis

Rachis is a term used to describe the main axial structure of an organism. In plant anatomy it alludes to the main vein of a leaf from which other veins branch off of an in human anatomy it describes our spine. The design takes subtle sections of human and plant anatomy and merges them into one cross section that is then modified so the section varies in width. Rachis is a re-envisioning of Alvaro Aalto’s Savoy Vase which was never given a specific function yet has been used to satisfy many types of functions: vase, candles, ash treys, sculptures, or even lights. Rachis is a resin cast of a two part machinable wax mold fabricated using a 4-Axis CNC. Several products like the ones mentioned before can be made from this one mold dependent on the amount of resin poured into the cast. The mold is then obviously designed to make many iterations of the same shape for varying functions. Clients choose their desired product or buy off the shelf and let beauty find it’s niche.
