This mosque is an individual contribution to a collaborative project completed in the fourth-year studio. The team was responsible for creating an urban village consisting of housing, light commercial and public buildings such as a gymnasium and this mosque. Like any piece of sacred architecture, a mosque must adhere to the liturgical and cultural requirements of its context: the orientation toward Mecca and division of the sexes in this case. Also, the Islamic appreciation for geometric patterns - arising from the religion's prohibition of representational art - inspired the gridded fenestration and overall nested octagonal form of the building.
