This design competition for a new public market with a courthouse on top is a unique combination of programs. Not only is the program for the new public building unique, but so is the location in the historic St. Lawrence District. As the City of Toronto Competition Brief states, the new market should address the adjacent St. Lawrence Market and Hall.
The geometry used in sculptures by Tony Smith proved a useful departure point to investigate the combination of programs.
The result was the prismatic interior landscape that vertically bridges the ground floor public market place with the court rooms above.
