Design Against the Elements is a competition aimed to design a sustainable community that can withstand natural disasters. The criteria of judging included: resiliency, construction technology, socio-economic sustainability, and adaptability to other sites.
The premise of the proposed design solution revolved around utilizing layers of defense as opposed to a super-structure. Multiple layers work together to create multiple barriers to disaster and weaken the attack degree by degree rather than in one grand gesture. The project focuses on using the landscape as a defense and integrating the building within the earth to create a unified system. There is no distinction between the site, the building and the defense system. All three are comprised of each other and all three influence the other.
