Repairing ill conceived connections and creating a new civic node, the MassArt Design Center enlivens Boston’s art community. Located at 621 Huntington Avenue, the Massachusetts College of Art and Design campus is the gateway to Boston’s Avenue of the Arts.
Assessing existing plans for the renovation of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, MassArt’s backyard neighbor, was essential for assuring the success of the new Design Center. By creating a visibly intriguing and active internal path the design center captures the Avenue of the Arts audience and lures them in.
The path takes visitors on a journey through student galleries and critique spaces, ending with a major new design gallery. The gallery’s second level café overlooks the newly constructed main entrance of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. This important connection links Boston’s Avenue of the Arts to a newly conceived “Area of the Arts”, encouraging pedestrians to visit both new facilities.
