Description: With a tight urban site it became apparent that useful & safe space was a premium. The thematic solution called 'FREESPACE' was defined as the weaving, merging and overlapping of functionally limited or unused space to create hybrid zones of multi-use. Examples of this strategy included: wider hallways with seating areas to accommodate both circulation and break-out activities, one required egress stair pushed to the exterior and connected with a roof deck & private courtyard at grade and the orientation of classrooms to be adjacent to the private courtyard with exterior doors that extended the indoor learning space to the outside.
