Decaying Typologies: The New Library

New forms of media and the ways in which we interact with them are becoming increasingly relevant to the realm of architecture. This research examines the co-evolving histories of library buildings and media types--particularly digitized books--to speculate on the future of the library typology in the next twenty years.

Due to the ubiquity of online social networks, the future library must accommodate new types of individual and collective information processing spaces for its users. The project’s location adjacent to Google’s global network epicenter at 111 8th Avenue provides a unique opportunity to synthesize digital information and physical space.
