About

Our work is for and about people. Ten to One refers to long, ten to one odds where the spectacular is made from the everyday. We are driven by the belief that in large the built environment is not reflective of the endeavors of its occupants, and that design practice rarely successfully merges design with practice. Design should be strategically and sustainably planned. People should always have the opportunity for a little privacy, or a little adventure. Projects should be affordable. Buildings should produce their own energy. Designers should successfully build. Projects should do all of this.

Ten to One has completed and has in construction or development 50 projects focused primarily in New York widely ranging from research to furniture to homes to residential, commercial, and institutional renovations to mixed-use and urban planning projects, from urban revitalization to high end residential projects. Since our inception in 2012 we have continuously moved towards our goal of working on more multi-faceted projects through professional flexibility and collaboration, even while maintaining a relatively small studio. We works in an ever widening range of scales and delivery methods, from design/build to partnering with multi-national teams of professionals, from mass produced furniture to urban design and infrastructure projects.

We work in close collaboration with each of our Clients. We also work in close collaboration and formal association with numerous other designers, professionals, and contractors. We often expand the boundaries of conventional design practice and tailor delivery methods for each project. We build, we initiate, and we collaborate on many of our projects for a number of reasons; to best serve each scaled project; to achieve our designs; to achieve relatively low budgets; and to provide services for the underserved or not-thought-of-yet.

Ten to One is partnered with Jones Cole Collaborative (JCCo), a licensed full service Design Professional Corp. led by partners Garrick Jones and Jeffrey Cole which specializes in joint collaborative ventures with world class teams of designers, developers and owners.

Garrick Jones, founding principal of Ten to One and JCCo, has worked as a published and award winning designer in New York City for 20 years. Garrick received his Master of Architecture from the Harvard Graduate School of Design and Bachelor Degree in Art and Architecture from Bennington College. Previous to founding his own firms he worked for such distinguished New York based firms as Diller Scofidio + Renfro, Alloy Development and Bernheimer Architecture. Notable completed projects include several mixed-use new construction condominium and gallery projects in Chelsea New York as well as the Loop Loft published in Dwell Magazine’s 2011 “Inside the City’s Smartest Homes.” Notable projects on the boards have included a 14 story hotel in SoHo, the Community Innovation Campus, a mixed-use school, community center, park, and housing development in Brooklyn, as well as a park and restaurant design as part of the Broad Museum development in Los Angeles currently in construction. Notable awards include an AIA National Housing Award, AIA NYC Design Award, Architect Magazine Annual Design Award and R+D Awards. Garrick contributed to the 2014 Venice Architecture Biennale as one of the multi-national team of outposts for the OfficeUS U.S. Pavilion.

Garrick has been invited to teach as Interim Professor at Bennington College and with Jared Della Valle and Andrew Bernheimer at the Parsons New School for Design Master of Architecture and Undergraduate Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree Programs. He has been an invited Review Critic for Graduate and Undergraduate programs at CUNY City College of New York and the NYC College of Technology, Parsons, NJIT New Jersey Institute of Technology, Columbia University, and Rhode Island School of Design.
