USIEF Fulbright Fellow, Mumbai, IN, Research Architect
Teresa's Fulbright fellowship is a two-part research and expository proposal that seeks to critique the current state of urban reform and design practices with respect to informal design responses to the housing and economic needs present in Mumbai. Ultimately, the research seeks to call attention to and learn from these small-scale, localized, and context-specific innovations that are currently taking place outside the shadow of the law and formal design practices. Given the extreme functional disadvantage that this segment of society (over half of Mumbai's population) faces living in slums lacking basic amenities, their presence and socio-spatial impact on the city is nothing less than astounding and needs to be recognized as learning opportunity for architects and urban designers interested in meeting the challenges of urbanization in growing cities.
