In my explorations in art and design, I have learned much about how my work can be a catalyst for major change. Architecture is the single most expansive expression humanity can make, that incorporates art, science, mathematics, and philosophy. This is what as a designer I take into consideration as I work to explore the possibilities of Architecture.
I began my study of architecture at the Design & Architecture Senior High School (DASH) where I first learned the principles of design and how to express myself artistically through drawing, painting and sculpting; as a well as a four (4) year intensive study of architecture in design studios lead by practicing Architects. In the same span and into my collegiate studies I held internships and part time employment at Miami-Dade County Department of Planning & Urban Design, Miami Beach Department of Planning & Historic Preservation, and The City of Miami - Virginia Key Beach Park Trust.
These were all invaluable experiences where I learned how the public sector works through the design and build process in both small scale projects such as the Rehabilitation of the Historic Hampton House in Miami Dade County. As well as, large scale projects such as the Preservation and Design of the historic Virginia Key Beach project an almost 100 acre site on a barrier island, needing both restoration of existing structures and the waterfront and the design of 200,000 square foot Museum on the site.
My departure from Miami occurred in 2007 my junior year at Florida International University were I was studying architecture in a four (4) year program. I elected to follow my desire to attend Pratt Institute, where I felt my talents could better be sculpted into a career as an Architect in their five (5) year program. As a transfer student I was placed in an excelerated program which was completed in the spring of 2010. This experience was unparalleled, and with the guidance and qualifications of my professors I have been endowed with the techniques and skills of the trade.
Through additional study in Architecture I attained the adeptness to apart of the future of the Architectural practice. Designing structures that fulfill social obligations while crafting not just sustainable but responsible systems that generate rather than consume. I believe that my generation of Architects has the responsibility to lead the practice to a new front dealing with the crisis of global warming, shortages in water and oil, urban over population and suburban sprawl. We as Architects have the power to make the greatest change and I intend to be the change that I seek.
