Employment

From January 2011 to April 2012 Mr. Barata was hired (part time) at Florida International University by the Construction Management Department. The Construction Management Department was highly interested in his expertise in the Building Information Modeling field, his knowledge of the Autodesk Revit Architecture software, and his communication skills. As a teacher’s assistant, Mr. Barata taught classes, and developed and administered tests for the Building Information Modeling class using Autodesk Revit.

In January 2010, Mr. Barata was hired (part time) by the Applied Research Center at Florida International University. Mr. Barata became a member of a team of researchers focused on wind engineering.

As senior project manager, Mr. Barata was responsible for the building construction, building schedule, cost analysis and control, and risk analysis. Mr. Barata verified and ensured that fundamental building elements and systems are designed, installed and calibrated to operate as intended. Mr. Barata supervised and served as a Technical Manager and Project Manager and managed work of sub-consultants.

Mr. Barata was responsible for reporting and preparing Scopes of Work (SOW) by determining level of efforts and labor rates. This work also included travel costs, reproduction costs, subcontractor costs (survey, geotechnical, etc.). This includes solving project problems and working with various clients. Mr. Barata performed quality control analysis on the projects relating to technical aspects, constructability (can the project be constructed with minimal change orders), bid-ability (will all contractors bidding on a set of plans and specifications make the same assumptions to give an apples-to-apples bid comparison), and economics (value engineering).

From 2001 to 2005, Mr. Barata led a group of international investors in the South Florida real estate business under the name “Euro Builders LLC”. As president and owner of Euro Builders LLC, Mr. Barata built and sold ten (10) luxury single family homes and one (1) multifamily home on both west and east Florida coasts. Sample projects include the single family home located at 7932 NW 164 Terrace, Miami – “Royal Oak” – 4500 square foot(2002); the single family home located at 8250 NW 154 Terrace, Miami – “Royal Palm”- 5500 square foot(2003); the single family home located at 2118 SW 26 Street, Cape Coral, Florida – 2100 square foot (2004); the single family home located at 2122 SW 26 Street, Cape Coral, Florida – 2100 square foot (2004), and the multifamily condominium located 8021 Harding Avenue, Miami Beach, Florida, 6500 SF, 5 (Five) Apartments Condominium Building. This project was sold to foreign investors in 2006 after the building permit was obtained.

The above listed projects features include site improvement, water well, septic tanks, wood roof trusses, masonry walls, central air conditioning system, tile or single roof, metal or wood interior partitions, impact windows and doors, high-end finishes.

The real estate businesses described above was fully directed by Mr. Barata including the site selection, site market analysis, feasibility study including zoning regulations; setback and preliminary layout; cost analysis and sales price estimation. Mr. Barata negotiated and closed both, land acquisitions loans and construction loads for all properties he bought, built, and sold.

Mr. Barata made the full architectural and engineering design for all houses and buildings, and obtained plans approval and building permits. Mr. Barata dealt with local and federal jurisdictions about regulations and building codes. Mr. Barata was responsible for complying with local planning and zoning laws, such as required setbacks, height limitations, parking requirements, transparency requirements (windows), and land use. Some established jurisdictions (Miami Beach, South Beach) required adherence to design and historic preservation guidelines.

Royal Ahold (Koninklijke Ahold) Supermercados Disco, Buenos Aires , Argentina, Project Manager

In 1998, Royal Ahold (Koninklijke Ahold) (Netherlands and USA based company) became owner of the “Supermercados Disco” through a joint venture. Mr. Barata was assigned to build Five (5) New Construction projects & thirty seven (37) Total Remodeling / existing grocery stores in Argentina (store listing for details available below). Mr. Barata successfully completed the project in one (1) year – 2000.Total square footage – 657,000. Total project post fifty million dollars. As manager of the construction team, Mr. Barata was the primary link with the client.

As group leader, Mr. Barata supervised and controlled simultaneously the work of three architectural design offices, four general contractors and similar numbers of MEP subcontractors and sub-consultant as well. Mr. Barata managed the work of sub-consultants; monitor subcontractors' progress, performance and compliance with contractual commitments; participate as necessary in contract dispute resolution and litigation concerning project/program performance, administration and other liability issues; reviewed and approve sub-consultant ; subcontractors' , general contractors, design offices , and vendor invoices, and resolve payment disputes; monitor schedules, billing and reports; costs and expenses to projects/programs; and adjusts billing records as required. Mr. Barata managed up to 50 personnel and 20 subcontractors at one time.
