About

NYS ARE Candidate, 2013.

Since beginning my architectural education at Pratt Institute in 2002, I have worked toward my own style of practice and design that is layered, complex, and often subtle, blending highly developed spatial skills, a strong technical sense, an interest in history, theory and the arts, and a commitment to integrity and professionalism.  I consider drawing to be my second language (or possibly first) and will work in any media.  My attention to craft and technical detail comes from hands-on building experience.  I have framed houses, milled furniture, and welded steel.

Ceaselessly a keen observer, I thrive on exploring architectural ideas through built and theoretical designs, artworks, and intellectual research.  Of late, particular interests have included the relationship between human form and architectural space where I have experimented with abstract architectural drawing/drafting of live models, and the concept of sustainability joined with spatial metaphors to provide new perceptions of human inhabitation within the ecological systems that surround it, where I am focused on developing ways that weather phenomena can be used to the effect of creating experiential atmospheres.

My portfolio of major projects is available online at www.alexgryger.com.  Minor works, experiments, and vignettes are documented online at both www.precisionpoetics.com and www.flickr.com/photos/alexgrygerstudio.
