Carlos E. Maldonado-Cruz was born in the city of Mayagüez, Puerto Rico on January 25th, 1981; however, he was raised in the city of San Germán. Carlos attended Lola Rodriguez de Tió High School in San Germán from 1995 to 1998. In the summer of 1998 he enrolled in the Architecture program at the Inter American University of Puerto Rico in San Germán. At the time, IAU did not offer a degree in Architecture except for their two-year program in conjunction with the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. The program was part of a 2+2 process in which students were able to start two years of Architectural studies then continue and complete the degree in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. During Carlos sophomore year he was asked to design a 3,000 square foot private residence for a prominent resident in San Germán. After months of design and hand drafting, the project became his first design to be constructed. During the summer of 2000, he was able to transfer all earned credits to UWM and move to Milwaukee to finish the bachelors degree. While attending the School of Architecture and Urban Planning of UWM he had the opportunity to study abroad several times in cities like London, Paris and Berlin. Carlos graduated in December of 2003 and quickly started applying for Architecture jobs, while working as a graphic designer at the student union in UWM. In June 2004 Carlos received an offer from an architecture firm in downtown Milwaukee. After accepting the offer he started working at The Albion Group designing commercial and mixed-use developments. In August 2007 he started his Master of Architecture degree at the Boston Architectural College through their new Distance Program. After two years and 5 semesters, in August 2009 Carlos graduated with a MArch degree.
