Jamie Wansten

Grand Rapids, MI, US

I am graduating from the University of Michigan with a Master of Urban Design. Most recently I worked on a sponsored studio project in Rosario, Argentina. I had the opportunity to visit this site to study social housing, block typologies, housing density, and park programming for the city. In addition to this project I visited Queens, NY to study affordable housing, waterfront development, land use, and zoning. This year I was also a competitor in the national ULI Hines Competition. It gave me an extraordinary amount of experience collaborating with landscape architects, urban planners, and financial coordinators. Alongside that project I was selected to be part of the Detroit Impact team sponsored by IDEO and ASTI Environment. In this organization I worked on an interdisciplinary team with a community in the City of Detroit. Together we brainstormed and then designed remediation and block typologies for a derelict brown field site. In all cases it was most valuable to learn my role on a team as both an architect and urban designer.

My background includes a Master of Architecture from the University of Detroit Mercy which I earned in May of 2008. Here I was fortunate to travel abroad and study community development in the deeply divided city of Warsaw, Poland. During my Masters year here I had work exhibited at the CAID art gallery and currently have drawings on permanent display at the University of Detroit Mercy.
