I studied at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York from 2000-2005, studying abroad my fourth year in Paris and Rome. I worked, then, for five years for several small offices in New York City, working on a number of diverse projects - mostly gut-renovation residential projects, but also web mastering for one of the firms. More recently I've been working in Los Angeles, California at a small design-build company on a number of single-family residences in the greater Los Angeles area.
I am now looking to further my experience in the field with future ground-up projects and to better familiarize myself with Los Angeles building code and zoning regulations.
iD Group, Los Angeles, CA, US, Junior/Intermediate Architect
At ID Group I worked on a number of residential projects in Los Angeles in a broad range of experiences and roles. I worked extensively with design development and construction documentation for each project, did code and zoning research for the cities of Los Angeles and Beverly Hills, put together presentations for and met with clients to go over design reviews, coordinated bid packages for contractors and subcontractors, researched products and materials, and discussed the varying aspects of each project with the engineers, consultants, and vendors that were involved in each project.
HS2 Architecture, New York, NY, US, Junior/Intermediate Architect
At HS2 I worked on a number of residential projects, a corporate headquarter, and the new Ralph Lauren flagship in New York. I worked extensively with design development and construction documentation for each project, put together presentations for and met with clients to go over design reviews, and discussed the varying aspects of each project with the engineers, consultants, and vendors that were involved in each project.
Broshears Stancil Projects, Brooklyn, NY, US, Junior Architect
At BSP I worked closely with the two principal architects on a number of residential gut-renovation projects. I was primarily responsible for producing design development and construction documents, visiting the sites for field measurements and to document progress of construction, and product research.
S. Russell Groves Architect, P.C., New York, NY, US, Junior Architect
At SRG I helped the project architects complete drawing sets for a number of retail stores, including the Blanc de Chine flagship in New York City. I helped with coordinating drawing sets and compiling finish books and schedules, program layout and analysis, and flow analysis for various floor layouts.
Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY, US, BArch, Architecture
Pratt's undergraduate program was a great and intensive introduction to the field of architecture. Its strong design curriculum was versatile in allowing its students to choose among some great faculty, each with his/her own approach to design in the field of architecture, which was balanced with a good selection of theory courses tempered with an equally strong curriculum of statics, materials, and MEP. This allowed each student to evolve and define his/her unique viewpoint and interests in the field, and it gave me a deep appreciation for the need of each design to be tailored to its specific circumstances.
Studying in Paris and Rome gave me the opportunity to learn much about the history of architecture and gave me a deeper appreciation for the context that history plays in every architectural endeavor. It led me to focus my thesis on an analysis of the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission and the city's laws concerning historic preservation. It looked at how the laws can sometimes lead to a stagnation in the organic growth of an urban fabric, which resulted in a proposal via case studies on how to modernize an interpretation of preservation that focuses on preserving a sense of history and of time passing rather than of historicity.
In high school I entered with my drafting class the NAWIC competition for high school students. The competition was to design a regional branch for a bank. The contest was judged based on design, programmatic layout, and draftsmanship among other criteria. The competition was first scored within the city, the winner went on to a regional contest, and the winner of that went on to the national competition. My entry placed second in the nation.
