Awards

Dr.Malakeh Taleghani Graduate Fellowship, 1st Place

A $1,000 Taleghani Graduate Fellowship, administered by the UA College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, Linguistics Department!

The competitive award is available only to UA graduate students interested in, involved in, and working on any aspect of Iranian studies, including Persian Literature, History of Iran, Geography of Iran, Iranian Linguistics, Sociology, Anthropology, Political Science of Iran, or aspects of Persian-ate, broadly conceived. Creative projects in Persian music, architecture, or arts are also eligible for funding.

The submitted research proposal includes a comprehensive overview of Iranian gardens, with a focus on three case studies from the 19th century including the gardens of Kerman, Yazd, and Kashan. The critical analysis of these formal gardens and their surrounding palatial structures is revealing significant socio-environmental information that is highly relevant for translation and application into contemporary architectural design. The research identifies design strategies of the water-integrated functions for both social relevance and environmental performance, and it transcends the historic patterns of use of these gardens and endeavors design application for potentially attaining net-zero water building developments in arid climate conditions.
