Shanghai Urban Living

The project proposal permeates the boundaries between the existing communities in four ways:

  • The interior road is moved to combine the four residential areas and separate them from the new commercial and bus stop strip along Siping Road. It is replaced by a pedestrian walkway that connects the four areas.
  • Horizontal paths allow access from the streets and into each residential area.
  • Green and open spaces are created for all residents.
  • Different programs are inserted into different areas, catering to the residents of the whole site and helping to create the proposed circulation.

Urban Element: The strong and weak elements determine which area should be regenerated or modified. Based on the informal settlement, new housing types - the slab and the village - are proposed.

Program: The current program is recombined to strengthen the four housing typologies as a whole community. Retail, community centers, and other programs are also introduced.

Road System: The original road for vehicles is converted into a pedestrian street, and several pocket spaces are inserted. Together, the pedestrian street and pocket spaces connect the four housing typologies.
