ZALAEGERSZEG CITY CENTER

This new replacement of mixed use building complex is one element in the regeneration program of the city center in Zalaegerszeg. On the place of a run-down block a new sponge-like building was proposed.

The square next to the site was already reformed in a previous projecting stage, converting it to a new pedestrian area which accommodates a market periodically. The new block is interrupted by passages to provide free movement between the surrounding streets and the square. The facades with their archway and perforations provide an articulated border wall to the square and at the same time make it possible to unify the interior courtyard with the exterior public areas. The mixed functions ensure that the area is filled with vitality. The concept of the facades is based on a duality between the modern interior’s playfulness with its glass walls and wooden shutters and the more traditional outside with plaster and stone sheathing, which fits in with the context.
