Fluxus Art Gallery - Copenhagen Infill

The Copenhagen Infill Project focused on the design of an Art Gallery for three pieces of Fluxus Art in a specific site location in the ‘Potato Rows’ neighborhood on the northwest side of central Copenhagen.  Specific attention was given to the integration of the design with the surrounding neighborhood, as well as to the display and contextual relevance of the artworks.

Fluxus art was a 1960’s movement that centered around the blending of mediums to reflect, stimulate, and explore the constant ‘flux’, or change, inherent to life and art. One of the main aspects of the movement dealt with the transcension of ‘thresholds’ and the often divergent perspectives that can be framed by their intersection or crossing.

The three works that are featured in the design are:

1. Name: TV cello
     Artist: Nam June Paik
Significance: The TV cello is made of three stacked TVs that broadcast images and recordings of the surrounding neighborhood and patrons ‘reflections’ recorded in the pod. The cello also acts as an origin of the gallery’s ‘transcension’ using images and sound to illustrate the intersection of space, time, and perception.

2. Name: Flygel (glass piano)
    Artist: Poul Henningsen
Significance: The glass piano acts as a visual and auditory sense-simulator. Located in the heart of the open atria-space, it is visible from many vantage points  and its centrality suggests accessibility that encourages the instrument’s use by patrons. When played, the sound acts as a further sensory stimulation and helps tie together the spaces.

3. Name: OVEI Pod
    Designer: OVEI
Significance: The pod is a vessel designed as a private space that provides personal intimacy midst surrounding dynamism and confusion. It is situated on the highest interior level, providing an end destination, and a sanctuary for solitary reflection. Patrons may enter the pod and record their reflections on a video-recording device. these may then, at the patron’s discretion, be broadcast on the ever-fluctuating images on the TV-cello below.
