This week the Akron Art Museum unveils a new Coop Himmelb(l)au designed expansion. Washington Post | slideshow | LATimes | local coverage 1 | 2
You beat me to it AP.
Here's an addendum:LA Times
From the local paper:building takes city into 21st centuryOn a walk through galleries
updated, thanks for the add'l links. any thoughts on an alternative title?
1. Ohio Museum Goes Back to the Future
seems to tie in nicely with both mainline reviews...I prefer the hard edge of the word Akron instead of Ohio though. It sounds like a sci-fi planet. ;)
Incidentally, the Back to the Future movie's setting was in a community that evoked the midwest.
wow. i remember thinking it was cool when i first saw the models and renderings around 6 years ago, but it looks amazing built. very cool.
I snuck a peak inside during construction. it is indeed amazing built. there is slight value engineering here and there, but nothing to take away. I hope to take a better (read: legal) visit soon and post it in my blog.
I have been following this project for years now and I have to agree, the built product certainly lives up to the ambitious design and to Coop Himmelb(l)au's design intent..its stunning in person! some clever devices at play in the roof really capture a futuristic and floating look
Coop Himmelb(l)au in Akron makes me optmistic about midwest towns being awaken to the value of world class architecture///hopefully detroit will, one day, wake up...
below, michael graves new/upcoming addition to the detroit institute of arts...congrats akron!
i agree simples. Coop in Akron, and soon FOA and MVDRV in Cleveland!
