Minimalism: the quality that a building or object possesses when every component, every detail and every junction has been reduced or condensed to its essentials. financial times
Wow. Considered architectural theory from the Finanacial Times? I'm gobsmacked.
Really good article, seriously.
didn't donald judd say that, or something just like it?
gobsmacked?! def: utterly astounded
new word for me, thanks lb.
I'm sure Judd did say that. My own borrowed/paraphrased version is "Simplistic is easy to do; simple is hard."
And gobsmacked is from the article: His own home was small and extreme, with two benches and a table, a wooden sofa-cum-day-bed, one long clean neat stainless-steel surface with square sink and single tap and no pictures (or indeed light switches, plug outlets, thermostats or skirting boards). “People came in and were gobsmacked.".
gob = mouth / face
smack = to hit
... you might be utterly astounded when something or someone hits you (unexpectedly) in the face, in fact you might be gobsmacked.
i see. now that i've read the article (and realized that it's written for a British paper), it makes a bit more sense.
i thought you put your junk in the box...
