Every science-fiction film is coming true. First it was The Day After Tomorrow; now it's Armageddon: "Scientists are monitoring the progress of a 390-metre wide asteroid discovered last year that is potentially on a collision course with the planet, and are imploring governments to decide on a strategy for dealing with it." Sounds like a job for Cameron Sinclair? :)
only if Liv Tyler is available...
I say we build some huge and ridiculous baseball mit, but it doubles, in the meanwhile, as a gigantic football stadium.
We build it in the exact location of the approaching asteroid's projected impact (which we will calculate using supercomputers). Then, decades from now when the asteroid hits, wham! It goes right into the padded glove of the football stadium - and architecture just saved your terrestrial asses.
We'll all get bear hugs. Archinect will be knighted.
Call me a purist, but if it's a baseball mit, it should be a baseball stadium.
Oh, you purists. Where's the fun? Jeez...
through his own special breed of stoner urbanismTM, michael sorkin has already conceived of the renewal of dodger stadium as a giant mit ... see wiggle (no signs of it online).
Yeah dude! I almost mentioned that! That was actually in my head as I was commenting - I love Wiggle. The mit's on p. 162 as part of his Chavez Ravine project.
Meanwhile, old news (and almost totally irrelevant) but check this paper out: Michael Sorkin on siting a new stadium in NY.
a plan being floated around: the gravitational tow tractor.
I tried that already, and it didn't work.
2036...hell, i'll be old enough to die then...and to think i was going to buy another annuity, guess i'll use the money on a sports car instead.
