Landmarking SCI-Arc Nixed

Last week, the Santa Monica City Council nixed a landmarking from February 2008 for SCI-Arc's original building on Nebraska Avenue. Developers successfully convinced the council to rescind the Landmarks Commission's decision to pave the way for—what else—condos. Oddly enough, Ray Kappe could care less, as he says the building has been altered beyond salvation. The Architect's Newspaper

i am saddened regardless. sci arc's soul was established there.

that is sad--not to compare such an amazing space to a more banal one, or demolition to renovation, but I remember the sense of loss I felt in seeing the old, cluttered, well-loved studios I had spent so much time in wiped clean and re-organized just a few months after graduating. Condolences, Orhan.

too bad sci-arc is now just Columbia light, there is not much "questioning the authority" going on there anymore.
