Originally dug out as a mine tunnel, this 15,000 sq ft cave in St Louis, Missouri has been converted into a family home and is now up for auction on Ebay. The design of the home is unfortunate, to say the least, but it still has the potential to make for an architect's dream project.

Are you kidding me!? I want it! My own private Bat cave! $300,000 is probably a bargain considering how much of their blood, sweat and tears went into it. And whoever wins will likely have a much lower energy costs per square foot than a comparable McMansion. Looks like a job for all of us....
Hey maybe Archinect should buy it and have our annual conference there. (We can also commence plans for total world domination; it's a cave, for god's sakes...)
PS. We can also hold people ransom there for "one mee-llion dollars...."
PPS. Sorry, I'm a dork. I want it!
Your point about lower energy costs and the great insulation provided by the surrounding stone is quite right. Plus, what an awesome idea!
Dubs, I am in - where do I sign?
Bugs. Possibly snakes. No thank you.
bats!
I think it would sell better if they titled their auction "Underground Lair for Sale" - wait, is this Cheney's old pad?
Too bad it looks so damn conventional inside. Lots of opportunity to be creative, but alas it's crammed with drywall and stuff from Home Depot.
I'm also wondering about the ventilation; it might offset the thermal advantages.
Ooh good point, archidose. We'll have to blast some holes in the roof for skylights and ventilation.
(Did you hear that? I said dynamite, people!)
DubK you could just let the bugs drill holes in the ceiling up to daylight. Or the snakes, they can tunnel. Much more ecologically sound method of construction than dynamite, *if* you can train the vermin to tunnel the direction you want.
Liberty bell, I promise there are no vermin. Or, if there are, I promise to have them removed before you come.
there would be one expensive skylight in the back but worth it.
Dubs - I am still in! Blast away!
Libs - we will remove all vermin from the premises and relocate all serpentine offenders if that would, indeed, relocate you! : )
Looks only interesting
