Discussing his experience(s) during a recent trip he opines that Hong Kong is the worst city for cyclists that he has encountered in the whole world. hahaha...he nailed the bike issue, but he kind of missed the mark on a lot of the other issues. ...and what a horrible picture to use of Hong Kong.
he does not 'get' high density
and, by the way, why would someone want to bike in Hong Kong? The transportation infrastructure is so well organized, you can literally get from your doorstep to anywhere in the city on either subway, or bus, or tram, or if you really have to, the taxi...maybe i dont get it
Did he look at the map where the parks are? I think people hike there, not bike there. And he rode a bike on an expressway ramp? Try that on FDR Drive. He's an idiot.
And as for public amenities... find me a cleaner public toilet in New York City before writing. The portable toilets in the East River State Park in Williamsburg are laughable. (and the park closes at night.)
It is futile for him to find any 'street life' on the street level. The streets are elevated walkways inside numerous shopping malls. They had long separated cars and pedestrians there. He is pretty much experiencing life there similar to walking around the underground level of Chicago, except, with sunlight.
I find Chinese are generally shy, and as a result, 'communities' of strangers are much harder to form as there are less individualists. Most people stick with their close friends, colleagues or families. I had a lot of fun talking to strangers because they totally did not expect that.
Overall, this is the problem of judging another with your own standards. That's why to many Asians, Westerners are pretty arrogant.
(and Asians easily offended.)
I would say London could win the city with the most street Pee-Ponds on Saturday mornings.
