Heike Hanada, a female architect from Germany, has been announced the winner of the 6,000+ submission international competition to design and expansion to Gunnar Asplund's Stockholm City Library. More info and images at Bustler
this winner will certainly be an exciting project, even moreso as ms hanada gears up to make it real.
some of us may just be disappointed because so many of the others were amazing fantasies that would have tested things that a lot of us think about. this certainly isn't conservative!
note that a lot of the negative comments reflect the disappointment that 'it looks like a building'!!
looks like a box with funny drawings on top. after waiting for so long for the result, and seeing the other stuf that was shortlisted, this is pretty conservative. It was obviously what they were looking for, you'd just hope more out of the swedes!
(wow, first post in months and it's a moaning one!)
normally i am all for beautiful whispers rather than shouting for the sake of being loud, and i think this building will be a beautiful serene creature...having said that, i wish the finalists would interact more with Asplund's library; the winner seems almost afraid of it...the stairs tucked in the back, refusing to link, interact...
My biggest disappointment with all the premiated entries is that they don't connect well with Asplund's original structure. So is the result a single functioning library that updates the and integrates the original fabric into a whole - or a a free-standing new library and a stand alone historic artifac?

after all that, pretty uninspiring...

agreed...I find it subtle and a creative balance between Asplund's library
"it looks like a building"? -- it looks like a boring building, "subtle and creative"? -- seems more like a one-liner...

Here's some more fantastic material on that competition and the winner Heike Hanada: www.arkitekt.se/asplund

well its the greenest looking one. actually having trees. you know. and not just a building max out all the space, next to the side walk.
I do agree the images from that building, only look good when its light up inside.
