Norman Mailer, the combative, controversial and often outspoken novelist who loomed over American letters longer and larger than any writer of his generation, died today at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York. He was 84. NYT
mailer was an amazing character in his own right and is among the last of a certain expository/literary generation of writer, pre-postmodern irony. 'executioners' song' had a huge impact on me in high school. and if it weren't for mailer, i'd have never understood the 'cremaster' movies at all.
