Husband, father, educator, and architect George Yu has passed away after a long and painful battle with cancer. George is survived by his wife, Carole, and his two daughters, Elena and Dara.
George was my mentor and employer for several years, as can say many young architects and designers fortunate enough to cut their teeth in his studio. George made significant contributions to the discourse and culture of design, especially through his post-paperless approach, emphasizing MAKING and BUILDING.
There will be a memorial service soon, but for now please consider making contributions to the educational trust recently established for Elena and Dara. I will repost this item when I get more accurate information. We will miss you, George!

sorry to hear that... so young..
This brings to mind Enric Miralles who I had the pleasure to work for and feel the same emptiness when he passed away. These moments are really hard, especially when you think how young Mr. Yu also was and the family he leaves behind. Please accept my condolences to the family and friends during such a hard time.
thats really sad, i wish all the best for the children.
this is really sad news. The only interaction i had with him is when he came with Denari for a couple of our juries and a small lecture, but he struck me as a very remarkable person, very balanced in his thoughts yet a little crazy. I still remember the model pics he showed of the huge project his office did for sony - again very balanced but remarkably fresh and innovative.
The architecture community in LA will never be the same.
RIP George
George Yu taught studio at SCI-Arc this past semester. It was an inspiration to see him continue his passion for design and teaching until the very end. He will be missed.
I had the good fortune to see him present at Artists Space a few years back. It was inspiring to witness his thoughtfulness, graciousness, and the evident joy he took in his work.
What a loss.
Truly tragic.
terrible news.
wow, so tragic. george was such a genuine, honest, insightful talented guy. it is always sad to hear of someone still so young (especially within this profession) passing away.....
i don't even know what else to say on this....except that it is truly sobering.
I've collected a bunch of links related to George's recent activity in a post I just made to my blog: http://serialconsign.com/node/81
Future Salon also posted some kind words yesterday:

I never met George but I devoured every publication I found with his work in it.
George was a client of mine. He was a brilliant designer and thinker, yet always open to discussing ideas with others to improve a project. He was also a big fan of Archinect! He would tell me how Archinect would come up in conversation with colleagues all over the world.
My heartfelt condolences to his family. Very sad news indeed.
I had no idea he was ill, I haven't really kept up with the SCI-Arc world I guess. He interviewed me when I applied to SCI-Arc, and I was lucky enough to be in one of his studios.
When he interviewed me, he tried to tell me how tough architecture was, and when I had a studio with him, he never let me use that as an excuse for half assing my work. He was a good mentor to me.
His death is a tragedy and he will be missed by many.
i remember seeing george sitting in reviews even when he was ill. such a committed person he was.
R.I.P George Yu
I'm so sorry to here that...
May God bless him and his family...
George is a colleague who was always ready to reach out to all, touch all, amaze with his talent, gentleness and sense of fun. He was a wonderful person through and through and a model architect for both peers and students. What a pleasure to have the opportunity to know him. I will miss him.
