's resignation from Denver's Justice Center is still shrouded in hypotheses and surrounded with impassioned pleas for famous design. Denver Post 1-2-3 l previous
it is scary that klipp is doing this project on their own now. the thing holl did was awkward enough, but yikes. well, denver got what they wanted, a star architect ego type to help complete their architecture zoo in the civic center. after seeing the stupidity and sheer selfishness of the libeskind museum, hopefully all of this will quash any desires to hire these egos in denver and start the decline of the stararchitect everywhere. we don't need this early modern-heroic-genius type culture anymore in architecture.
The lesson of this episode is not that the city should avoid such innovative approaches to picking architects. After this blow to its national standing, the city needs great architecture more than ever.
Unfortunately, it likely will be a long time before such an important public project comes along again.
but I love the image you conjure AP or an even more perverse one where a mass of enraged citizens burn the city in a demand for better design...we want Holl indeed!
while i am not a holl fan - i appauld his actions! most architects who would get crappy scetches from technocrats that couldnt hold a job in the lowest of lowest practices [and call them self clients] would just continuously roll over and make real mediocre crap. look at this jem of the lincoln presidential library -2005-by hok!
I don't blame Steven for walking away and can easily speculate at the situation that led to his withdrawal.
As for the idea of ego driven [st]architecture, I completely disagree. First of all, I don't believe that these architects are driven by ego, but by an ability to see a different possible world and a passion to manifest these visions for society.
Having just returned from Daniel's museum openening in Denver, I think buildings that contrast their fabric and are a-contextual are exactly what we (humankind) need. Spaces that force a reaction and spark an interest rather than the blank banality that is constructed nationwide everyday. The museum is a beautiful blend of public scale, artistic radicallism, technology, light control, and materiality. Watching people led by curiosity and anticipation, explore the building's atruim and experience a spatial envelope they have never before felt was quite remarkable.

I can almost picture it - a group led by the same person that scrawled "Prada 4 ever" into the wet sidewalk..."we want Holl! we want Holl!"
well, impassioned pleas from an op-ed anyway...
