Cesar Pelli and Carlos Ferrater unexpectedly share competition win for the Gran Marina Las Palmas, Canary Islands, and the chance to build several structures on the isthmus. The first goal is to reunite the city by burying a central vehicular artery (sounds familiar...). This will join the Las Canteras beach and Puerto de Las Palmas. Previous details in the news here and here.
The defeated contestants were Rafael Moneo, Nicholas Ghimshaw, Ben Van Berkel and Kazuyo Sejima+Ryue Nishizawa. Pelli proposed designs for a new City Hall, a museum, administrative and commercial buildings in a 'lush' green area with botanical gardens and a 32-story hotel and 360 rooms. Ferrater also included similar proposals in his entry, although he isolated residential buildings from administrative and educational programs. It is not yet clear how they will divide the work. The decision comes as a surprise since the mayor, Josefa Luzardo, had said that only one firm could win according to rules. Many sectors were calling for adoption of different parts of the various schemes. (source). Diario de Avisos mentions that the mayor now suggests that some buildings be asigned to the various other participating firms.
