Croatia's much anticipated floating Pavilion doesn't make it to port, while the rebiennale creates a rogue pavilion out of the scraps of past biennales.
A group of Croatian architecture practices collaboratively designed Brod / The Ship / La Nave: a floating pavilion for Croatia, to be towed across the Adriatic Sea at 10 x 20 x 3 meters, in the form of a welded mesh cage on a barge. Unfortunately, it didn't make it to port due to some technical problems. Too bad, I would have loved to have seen it ... expecting it to be the sleeper hit of this year's biennale. But I think as long as they were committed to the project and the process, and not attached to a specific outcome, it still could have an impact on the biennale, as the premise of the project had a kind of rogue experimentation, collaboration and resourcefulness that stood out in such an otherwise established set of exhibitions.

"I think that the primary concept was encouraged by the awareness that Croatia does not have a possibility to buy a land lot in Venice and really create a pavilion there ... Let the large and rich countries build pavilions they can afford or rent expensive venues - this is our way ... I believe that this project might be an indicator that a good idea does not need gigantic funding or a mega-ego." (Goran Rako)
Also check out the biennale alternative: the rebiennale, which takes the scraps of past biennales to make a new pavilion-as-social-center / squat in Morion.
