The facilities for Milestone & Hannover preschools, serving children ages 0-5 with special needs, had extensive programming criteria and a need for highly efficient layouts. Particularly challenging was the design of infant classrooms, limited to a ground floor locationand bound by strict requirements for room areas, crib clearances and permissable number of infants. The design of the exterior aimed to draw from the Boerum Hill residential context, using earthy-colored brick with a corbelled parapet wall. A glass walled double height lobby with playfull glazed brick cap and curved yellow canopy welcomes in the cummunity of Brooklyn families. An interior palette of soft pastel VCT and paint finishes was specified. For cleaning maintenance, a wainscot was incorporated; heavy gauge vinyl wallcovering was designed using a custom drawn repeating module of children’s handprints.
