Program: To renovate and refinish and existing four bedroom apartment and create a new home for a family of seven.
The design was tailored to the client’s more traditional aesthetic as well as the buildings pre-war design and detailing. The first design choice was to transform the formal dining room into a family room and to enlarge the kitchen area to create more space for the five children, two dogs, and the entire family to hang out. A dining area was added to the oversized living room, giving the public spaces of the apartment the right sense of scale, while appropriating the apartments use of space. The entry foyer was modified with mirrored doors (to create the sense of more space as well as reflect light in from the new large living room windows). A powder room was added, again using a mirrored wall to enhance the sense of space. The bedroom hall and bedrooms were remodeled and the ensuite bathroom was brightened using white glass and porcelain finishes. The master bedroom was reworked allowing for larger closet space while the master bath was reconfigured giving an extra vanity and a shower with horizontal striped polished marble slabs. Central air conditioning was added and integrated into the existing room layouts so as to virtually disappear while adding a level of comfort to each space. The overall effect is an elegant, unified apartment design that is family user-friendly.
