The Knowledge Park

The Knowledge Park is one of the largest public spaces and parks proposed in the area of Brunnshög Lund. Lund, located in the southeast of the Skåne region, houses some of the most prominent institutions for education and research in Scandinavia. The park is situated next to the new Science Village and European Spallation Source, one of the most important science and technology infrastructure projects being built today. Mandaworks has developed together with Lund Municipality a concrete concept idea of the future activity and landscape park.
The proposal for the Knowledge Park is blending the timeless cultural landscape with the contemporary desire for attractions and experimenting, activity and motion.
The area has a distinct topography that we enhance by placing five activity islands on the heights of the landscape, while paying attention to the existing cultural landscape elements and the nearby Kungsmarken Nature reserve. Five themes define the islands: playfulness, experimentation, tranquility, exercise and fantasy.
The Skåne region’s landscape unfolds with rich diversity from east to west, north to south. You can find forest areas in the north and rocky hills to the west, with in-between open agricultural fields and varied micro landscapes. We drew inspiration from the five major Skåne landscapes while seeking to find interesting approaches for each of the designed islands. The islands, free from the existing natural and cultural landscape constraints, have the opportunity to become something different, and their relationship with the surroundings can bring an interesting contrast. New shapes, materials and colours will create new environments and activity platforms.
The park area is gently undulating with a few hills and a lower valley, but can be perceived as being relatively flat. We found it interesting to seek the heights, strengthen them and create greater contrast in the landscape. They can become panorama points and landmarks, while the lower valley can collect water.
Each park island has a main theme and focus while also unfolding a variety of sub-themes. Like ingredients in a dish, the type and amount has been adapted to each island, so that the landscape, the size of the island, the location adequately meet the city’s need for recreation.
On the northern park entrance, next to the Max IV laboratory we placed the experimentarium island. Defined by geometrical grass terraces, a variation of materials and plants in dazzling colours, greenhouses and experimental gardens, this is a dynamic and flexible environment that can accommodate new features and activities.
South of the experimentarium, a playful island is an artificial elevation that is visible from the distance. On top, a hedge maze is cut in a variety of shapes and heights, with spaces that invite to playing and climbing. Play sculptures and lively shapes can be found between the hedges.
Below, a grid of trees of different sizes and species form a dense quiet forest island on a slight elevation in the landscape. In the forest you can discover an observation tower, play objects and small huts that sit, lie and stick up between the trees. It offers an experience in the woods with a clear view of the surroundings, and some surprises in the clearings.
A fantasy landscape with tall, gentle hills and low valleys covered with fruit bushes and trees create a ”cherry valley” in the middle of the park. The manmade hills allow for play, exercise, and activities in the winter with its adventurous slopes.
At the park’s southern entrance, a sports island takes shape through a grid of trees forming multiple rooms. The inner surface is flat and invites for games and team sports. The soccer fields, basketball courts, running paths and spaces for various sport activities are combined with play. At the same time it is a space where self organised and spontaneous events can take place. To ease the movement through the park, a loop linked to various entrances and paths weaves the islands together.
By sampling different themes, we have five stories for the five park islands. Each has its own appearance, content and relation to landscape and location. The stories reveal themselves as individual landscapes that together blend old and new in a diverse and coherent recreation mosaic.
