Village Townhouse

The Village Townhouse is a residence in the West Village neighborhood of Manhattan. This project was completed while Principal, Maegan Walton, was a lead designer and project manager at Elmslie Osler Architect.

The project consisted of a complete gut renovation to a historic home located in a Landmark District of New York City. All interior partitions, flooring, stairs, windows and doors were removed, along with the entire back wall of the building. All five floors of the structure, as well as the roof, were reconfigured. The rear facade was re-structured to have larger window openings to capture the southern exposure and a large skylight was installed in the roof to capture northern light for the artist's studio.

The client was interested in restoring the house to it's original historic character. Windows were glazed with restoration glass and carefully crafted in mahogany frames. The stair layout was simplified to have a more traditional configuration along the western wall of the townhouse. Antique Shaker style mantles were chosen to adorn six of the eight fireplaces and this style continued to inform the furnishings and fixtures throughout.
