The intention for the Walnut Factory building was not to change the structure or mask over the historical
iconography of the existing architecture. Our goal was to reveal and showcase these unique and existing characteristics. We did this by eliminating excess walls to the exterior and we allowed natural light to flood the interior spaces. The successful end result allowed the renovated Walnut Lofts to feel like a tranquil sanctuary from which to explore the bustling city. This eight-story structure belongs to the vibrant LA Arts District. The ground level showcases the historic preservation of its interior and connects to contemporary lifestyles by introducing a restaurant, a farmer’s market, and essential services to the community. The project is designed to build upon the past and develop a strong revitalizing fabric for the future of this developing area.
